  4. Looking At"

  19. ABOUT THIS PROGRAM:
  20.  
  21. Screen Saver Wars came about after I purchased the 
  22. Terminator Screen Saver, at the time I was thinking how 
  23. great the modules were and then I realized after I had 
  24. looked at them for 10 minutes or so I was bored and moved on 
  25. to the next module. I tried After Dark and got the same 
  26. result, both companies have gone for the "lots of little 
  27. modules" approach. What I wanted to do was create a screen 
  28. saver with enough meat in it that you would still be 
  29. interested in looking at it weeks later. The result is in 
  30. your hands, I hope that it is successful.

  32. Screen Saver Wars is a screen saver that shows the epic 
  33. battles between the Green Army and the Red Army. The battles 
  34. take place all through history and fantasy as well as in 
  35. exotic locations. The format is the same, each Army starts 
  36. with one base. The bases generate a new army every X turns. 
  37. There are several neural bases, these may be conquered and 
  38. their production turned to creating new armies. The winner 
  39. is the Army that captures all the bases.

  41. The program features 10 sets of graphics and a "Random" 
  42. option. You do not see all the graphics each time from a 
  43. set, so it is possible to go for days/weeks and then see a 
  44. new graphic. The Armies uses different strategies and 
  45. production philosophies to win, which is randomly generated 
  46. each game. See if you can figure out what they are using!

  48. I have plans to create several more "Screen Savers Worth 
  49. Looking At" in the Public Domain, the next one should be 
  50. really great! Then I was thinking of turning back and 
  51. creating Shareware versions of these programs. The Shareware 
  52. versions would support 256 colors, sound, and additional 
  53. features. We'll see if I ever get there.

  55. INSTALLATION: 
  56.  
  57. The Screen Saver Wars is a standard Windows screen saver. It is 
  58. saved as a .SCR file. After you have PKUNZIP'ed the files ,copy the 
  59. SSWAR.SCR file to the Windows directory, and the two .VBX files to
  60. the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. 
  61.  
  62. Note: There are different versions of the .VBX files in existance,
  63.       check the dates on the files and make sure you ae using the
  64.       latest ones.

  66. In Windows, start the Control Panel, then go into Desktop, then 
  67. scroll down the list of screen savers, at the bottom should 
  68. be "War!". If it is not there then the program was copied to 
  69. the wrong directory.

  71. After selecting "War!" then push the "Setup" button. 
  72. Although this is not needed (the program defaults are random 
  73. graphics and medium speed), it will allow you to specify how 
  74. you want it to run. There are two options: Graphics Set, 
  75. this determines which set of graphics the program will use, 
  76. at the bottom is a "random" option. The other is the Speed 
  77. setting, this determines the delay between moves and how 
  78. many explosion flashes during a battle. After the settings 
  79. are selected a small SSWAR.INI file is created in the 
  80. Windows directory to retain the information.

  82. REMINDER: Don't forget to turn off any other screen saver 
  83. (like After Dark) or they will interfere with each other.

  85. DESIGNERS NOTES:

  87. I tried putting sound into the program, but I never 
  88. could come up with a combination of sounds that did not 
  89. grate on your nerves sitting next to the monitor for an 
  90. hour. So I took out the  sound stuff, perhaps next time...

  94. Although I have tried the program out on several systems with
  95. different configurations I cannot guarantee it will function
  96. on your particular computer. Furthermore, although I have made
  97. a significant effort to eliminate any problems with the
  98. software I cannot be held responsible for anything it does to
  99. your computer.
